> increased supply lowers prices This is actually the issue. Automation increases the supply of cheap labor to the point that working people can no longer offer a competitive price. With capitalist ownership and the dichotomy between owners and workers, working people become redundant, but there is no mechanism for them to suddenly have ownership over the newly created automation tools. Essentially it doesn't matter how cheap the goods are if no one can earn a wage to buy them. Things would never be completely free because there will always be finite resources and energy with which to make them even if labor is in excess. Transitioning to socialism means transitioning those automated tools (aka the means of production in a fully automated world) to public ownership so everyone has an equal right to their use.
