My partner and I have been car free since we moved last year and it's going really well. I personally would recommend it along with getting a Zipcar membership. We are on the isthmus and each have a mountain bike and an ebike. Between ebike and public transit we can get anywhere between roughly Atwood and campus in about the same time as a car. For the further east side we use public transit or ebike, but on rare occasions when we have to get to the dreaded western suburban sprawl, we often use the Zipcar membership. We also love to camp and hike so we either bike camp or use a Zipcar, especially in the winter. It's definitely doable in Madison (and honestly more fun than when I used to own a car). For the winter I recommend a neck gaiter and nice mittens, and ski goggles if the temp is below 20. Also we've invested in cozy socks and wear them everywhere now. I'd say I'm warmer now than when I used to drive since I'm always prepared for it. I've gotta say it's a pretty fun and carefree lifestyle zipping around by bike in the summer. The biggest problem is that there are still some clueless drivers out there. But Madison is full of bike paths that keep you away from them most of the time, which makes it way better than other cities I've biked in.
