Moving to the left and beginning to grapple with the ethical justification for equality actually _forced_ me to become vegan. I spent a long time trying to work through a good justification for why I intuitively believed that everyone deserves a life free from oppression. The best justification I could figure was that we should improve well-being, and that the experience of suffering from oppression is so harmful that we need to eliminate it. But it became obvious that animals experience the same and should therefore have the same rights. I have no idea how the average leftist justifies that their belief in equality ends at human beings.
