"People" don't intrinsically want more in the sense of consumption. A lot of the time those desires are manufactured by advertising, by social policies that make meaningful community connection impossible, or by systems that produce generational trauma that leaves us feeling alienated and looking for an escape. We're not talking about living in caves here. We're just talking about things like only eating meat once or twice a week, only flying once every few years, most people living in denser cities, a lot less "as seen on TV" plastic junk that never works anyway, and no billionaires flying to space for vacation (but space travel for science and the common good is fine of course). We can "go with the flow" continuing competition for scarce resources and minority overconsumption, but like I said, then you have no choice but to turn to ecofascism to deal with the problem of who gets cut off from the resources to survive.
