The issue is not "whether they are better for the planet" the issue is what distance is the breakeven point. There is an up front environmental cost for bike, battery, motor, and renewable energy source (the traditional bike only has the bike portion of this). Then there is the continuing environmental cost of the food for the rider (the ebike uses less food per mile). So the question is at what distance does the food cost exceed the up front environmental costs of the ebike. I did a calculation for my own solar powered bike and came to the conclusion that I get ahead at 3000 miles (which I've passed now).
