The key is just writing out the limits on energy and raw materials on earth. To provide the energy footprint of the average American today we'd need renewables to cover a huge area (I think it's like half the great plains). I haven't calculated it out for food, water etc, but I seem to remember that the estimate was: for everyone on earth to live like an American we'd need 5 Earths. So the trick right away is we need to reduce the consumption of the richest people on earth. There is enough lithium minable for ebikes and cell phones for everyone on earth. But I doubt that's the case for everyone to have a private helicopter. I'm hoping to actually calculate all this stuff eventually, but haven't gotten into it. If anybody knows a resource with these answers I'd be fascinated. My gut tells me it's totally possible to have a high tech future if you're selective to choose things that are high information, low energy, low mining.
