I think it does more harm than you think. I wasn't banished here, but I was removed from the r/alltheleft subreddit for trying to discuss whether voting third party (in the US) was a bad strategy for socialists. (I have never seen an argument for why third party is good, just a blanket statement that people should never vote for the lesser of two evils.) But being banned for what I think is a legit question made me pretty quickly question how authoritarian the socialists in these spaces would be if given actual power. I haven't walked away after just one instance, but you can bet that I'm now way more suspicious.
