Definitely good points! we are planning on going most weekends from now til we start. We limit the hub motor to 750 W because that's what the law is in CA to stay classified as an ebike. The motor and battery weight definitely pays for itself. The big factor is that we are hauling quite a bit of gear and food for backpacking. We train on the tandem carrying the motor+battery weight but not using them, then we add the gear weight and the assist which roughly cancel out. The solar panels are just needed to go decent distances away from towns while carrying everything (without needing like a 200 Ah battery.
