From my perspective, I think in those very large co-ops it's helpful to imagine comparing with non-co-op companies of a similar size. It's possible that REIs situation as a co-op has helped mitigate some of the worst impulses of a large chain retailer. I'd imagine if other large multinational retail corporations were co-ops their members would be able to organize to stop some of the more abysmal labor/environmental practices. This is sort of similar to how I feel when I look at non-profit CEO pay. It's frustrating to see that number of zeros for "philanthropy," but at the end of the day, you have to compare it to corporate CEOs who are taking much larger sums without any substantive push-back.
